To my Irish Teachers

Ryan, thank you for working with me to improve my level of Irish this past summer, and most specifically for editing the first three scenes of Chapter 1 and discussing my mistakes with me. Your lessons opened my eyes to how to express myself using complex sentences and drew my attention to the stylistic devices and grammatical structures necessary to write creatively and effectively in Irish.

Mollie, your enthusiasm and feedback on the translation of the show's dialogue did a lot to boost my confidence, considering that I had put off translating some of the trickier lines for months. Thank you for reading through the dialogue with me in our lessons and providing me with examples of authentic language regarding filler words and register so that the sense of the original was maintained as much as possible.

To Everyone Behind BBC's Merlin

Thank you for adapting Arthurian legend for the screen in the modern day, choosing to incorporate Old English and Irish into the script in unique ways, walking the line between tragedy and comedy well, and breathing life into legend.

Ten out of ten. Would spend my quarantine this way again.

DisclaimEr

The figures of Arthurian legend as presented here along with their a-legendary companions as they appear in "Merlin - The Dragon's Call," Series 1, Episode 1, BBC, 2008, are the property of the BBC, with whom I am in no way affiliated or endorsed. As are their deeds and their dialogues, which were written by Julian Jones.

What's mine are the hours of coffee, tea and occasionally port-fueled crafting and dictionary consultation that went into improving my Irish by writing, as I encourage my students to do, in detail about the last show I watched.
